Chairman & Founder
The name “Embrey” has long been recognized in the real estate community. In the 45-plus years since his first job with an Austin homebuilding company, Walter M. Embrey, Jr. has helped to create homes for thousands of families and businesses. His philosophy of developing unique, high quality product on every site has earned Walter and the entire Embrey organization a reputation for creativity and excellence.
Walter, a native Texan from San Antonio, attended the University of Texas at Austin and received a B.B.A. in Finance in 1968. His real estate career began in 1967, while still in school, with a large Austin homebuilding company. In 1971, Walter joined Jagger Associates, Inc. as Vice President of Construction. Shortly thereafter, he became Executive Vice President of Operations and during his tenure he developed several commercial projects, single-family homes and over 6,000 apartments. In 1974, Walter formed Embrey Investments, Inc., the forerunner of the current Embrey Partners, Ltd. Based in San Antonio, Walter, and his partners have operated continuously and created over 150 major successful real estate projects throughout the continental U.S., with over 30,000 apartments and condominiums and more than 6.0 million square feet of commercial development totaling 32 million square feet.
Walter was a founding member and chairman of the Real Estate Finance and Development Program, College of Business at UTSA and was a charter member and co-chairman of the Real Estate Finance & Investment Center, McCombs Business School, University of Texas at Austin. He also served on the Advisory Board of the Architecture School at the University of Texas and served for ten years as the Chairman of the President’s Council of the Real Estate Council of San Antonio. Walter has also served on various other boards, including the Texas Biomed Institute (formerly Southwest Texas Biomedical Foundation), Witte Museum and the National Multi-Housing Council. In 1995, Walter M. Embrey, Jr. was recognized for his business and civil achievements as San Antonio’s Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2003, Walter was awarded the Philip M. Barshop Founder’s Award for excellence and leadership in the real estate industry.
President & Chief Executive Officer
Trey rejoined Embrey Partners in 2010 after operating a successful apartment redevelopment business of his own for nearly a decade. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and made his career in real estate upon graduating.
Trey explains his passion for the business in this way: “I am a builder by nature. I really enjoy seeing a product from the infancy of an idea to the completion of a successful ‘deal’ that creates value. The process of designing both the product and the experience of each project is personally rewarding.”
Over the course of his career, Trey has directly contributed the development or redevelopment of more than 9,000 apartment homes.
He is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and serves on the board of directors of the National Multifamily Housing Council and on the President’s Council of the Real Estate Council of San Antonio. Trey is also a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization.
His builder instincts, experience and desire to make a difference impact his personal life, as well, inspiring him to serve on numerous boards and committees, including Habitat for Humanity, SAMMinistries, Furniture for a Cause and KIPP San Antonio’s Real Estate Committee.
Chief Investment Officer
Garrett brings over 10 years of real estate finance and development experience to the Embrey team, where he leads our capital markets and corporate finance activities. Garrett also serves as a member of our firm’s investment and executive committees. Prior to joining Embrey in 2014, Garrett served as vice president of capital markets for The Hanover Company, where he helped source nearly $3 billion in capital for multifamily projects, which led to the development of over 9,000 units nationally, tripling the company’s development pipeline. Garrett’s experience spans capital raising, project underwriting, development management, brokerage, commercial operations and asset management.
Prior to joining Hanover, he was a consultant in the economic development and energy practices for HR&A Advisors in New York City where he worked on a variety of real estate and economic development projects in New York, Connecticut and Texas, in addition to implementing energy efficiency improvements throughout the portfolios of New York City’s largest commercial landlords. He began his real estate career working for Southeast Venture, a developer in Nashville, Tennessee, where he helped acquire, develop and broker a variety of commercial and land holdings.
Garrett is a native San Antonian and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Business Honors Program at The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in real estate development from Columbia University.
Chief Financial Officer
Rod joined Embrey in 2017 and brings more than 20 years of accounting, finance, and management experience, with 12 years specifically in the multifamily real estate industry. As Embrey’s Chief Financial Officer, Rod is responsible for all accounting, tax and partnership reporting, administration and relationships with key constituents, and corporate finance. Previously, he was Executive Vice President and Finance / Accounting Partner at JPI, where he managed all corporate finance and a large team of accounting professionals overseeing $3 billion of assets from construction start to disposition. Prior to JPI, Rod was with Belo Corp. in the Corporate Finance group, and with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the Financial Advisory Services practice. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree of business administration in finance, as well as a master of business administration degree from Southern Methodist University, Rod has been active in mentoring accounting and finance professionals in various leadership positions throughout his career. Rod is an active member of the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI).
